Occupational Therapist and Head of Therapies at the Hesley Group

I am an Occupational Therapist with a BSc and Masters level degrees in Occupational Therapy and a second Bachelor’s degree in Psychosocial Interventions – Mental Health Practice as well as formal training in leadership and management and project management.

I took several years to realise that this was my chosen career, having travelled and worked in the catering industry for a decade plus prior to returning to University to train as an Occupational Therapist and qualifying in 2001.  I grew up in Devon, have worked in Guernsey and I also lived in Italy working as an Au-Pair for a year, before arriving in the Midlands in 1995 to visit an old-school friend - twenty something years on and I’m still here.

As a therapist, I have experience in the NHS and private settings within the community, physical hospital setting and mental health high secure hospital. This has been with older people and adults and children with a range of physical and mental health diagnosis. The majority of my career has been working with adults with mental health difficulties, within the high secure environment with people with offending histories and a range of personality disorders, other mental health diagnosis such as schizophrenia and also learning disability.

I have developed through my career to take on more managerial roles but still remain very close to people we support through engaging with clinical work as much as possible and also through high levels of clinical supervision to the team of OT’s within the team. My role now at the Hesley Group is as Head of Therapies, which includes managing the team of OT’s, Speech and Language Therapists and Therapy Assistants. My role is to lead this team through service development initiatives, for which we have active and ongoing actions plans and guide individuals through their development as practitioners and professionals. I enjoy my own ongoing and evolving learning and consistently seek new challenges and projects to maintain my motivation to be an evolving/developing Occupational Therapist.
